Best Links This Week
The very best news and posts and reviews and links of the week. A more exhaustive list is in the ‘Complete Links’ section below.
Last Night In Alicante (Flagging Down The Double E's)
"While I loved watching and listening to Charley Drayton on the drums last year, I really enjoyed what new drummer Jerry Pentecost brings to the band. Jerry plays in a more straightforward style than his predecessor, but it’s effective; I particularly enjoyed his swinging shuffle beat on “Goodbye Jimmy Reed.”
1961 Recording and other Rarities at July 4 Auction (Omega Auctions)
"A roll of BASF audio tape (4" spool) containing approx 15 minutes of audio, previously unpublished, of a performance by Bob Dylan at 'Gerde's Folk City' in New York City, September 1961. On the recording which is of very good quality, Dylan is Introduced as "Bob Dylan from New Mexico". It is believed that this tape contains the only known recording of Dylan performing '..T For Texas' unaccompanied."
Shadow Kingdom Review (City A.M)
"Geniuses never do what we want them to: if they did, they’d be just like us. There’s recompense for the dismay we sometimes feel at the trajectory of our heroes. After the initial confusion comes comprehension, forgiveness, and awe – followed by amnesia about the traversal of that progression. Soon you forget why you ever struggled; they’ve normalised a place you’d never have got to under your own steam."
Don't Miss The New 10-Year-Old Rye from Heaven's Door (Mens Journal)
"Simply having an age statement, even 10 years, isn’t enough: It’s got to taste amazing. And the Decade Series Straight Rye meets that benchmark handsomely. This whiskey is all about intensity and complexity—flavor that gets deeper with every sip. Just as you can listen to Dylan’s “Blood on the Tracks” over and over again, getting something different from it every time, you can sip this whiskey and never have the same experience twice."
Review: The Double Life of Bob Dylan - Heylin (Critics At Large)
"So I’m delighted to report that Heylin also realizes, even more expansively than I, that Dylan’s storytelling prowess reflects the ancient origins of all literature, and that every enigmatic song he ever crafted is also a novel capable of embodying the literary essence of Cervantes, Melville and Hemingway: his words tell the tale of the times we live in."
Dylan Covers: Series of Dreams (Untold Dylan)
"Now I obviously don’t know if you ever get that feeling of shivers and temperature change just from listening to a piece of music, but as I write this while I am listening to Bob’s version for the first time in years, I am getting exactly that."
