Early bootlegged live performances featuring Dylan originals and folk classics
I love the Gaslight tapes; wish the "real" tracklists/order were known and confirmed. I think the rumored "Villager" set said could be really interesting if they can contextualize it all properly and show what the scene was like, the different vibes at different clubs, etc.
A while ago I ran into a Village Voice ad listing Dylan among the performers at a hoot at the Gaslight in 63 and tracked down just about everyone else mentioned in the ad who was still ambulatory (except Bill Cosby). No one quite remembered it but I got some awfully juice gossip about the scene!
An enjoyable writeup, thanks. Reminds us how much of this great early stuff there is, and makes some of us pine for the long-rumoured 'Villager' edition of the Bootleg Series.
