Thanks so much for these lists! I have the love but not the time...I managed to get through all ten discs this weekend. Now to Spotify with your lists to listen again. Thanks for doing the "work" for me!
In searching for dates and clues to when certain songs were started and finished, I took another look at the track sheet pictures in the Tell Tale Signs booklet. There is a lot of info that can be gleaned from taking a careful look at that. For instance, Dirt Road Blues is a Criteria Studios track sheet, But it says "cassette" at the top and "DAT" on tracks 23 and 24. So it was already recorded in some fashion earlier then re-recorded at Criteria.
Brain Blade's name is on a track for "Kick" but not listed on the album as one of the musicians.
And last but not least, we have some tracks labeled "BD Vocal Oxnard March 14/97 Sony C37 LA2A". This is for Dylan singing new vocals back at the Teatro and listing the mic and compressor/limiter he used. There's one for recording new acoustic guitar as well. So we can see this song was worked on and developed in at least three different instances before it was done (Not sure if the DAT tape was one of the early New York demos Lanois worked on or not).
It's also the first time I've seen a date for the overdub sessions, indicating when they finally went back to the Teatro to finish the album.
If someone knows for sure when and where the first version of Dirt Road Blues was recored with Winston Watson on Drums, please let me know.
That's great, thanks. I'm guessing you're talking about Mark Howard. I read his book and every interview I could find, but there's still so many unanswered questions. The biggest take away was that HE is responsible for a lot things that Daniel Lanois gets credit for. And Dylan trusted him more and seemed to only want to work with him at a certain point. (He didn't want to even be in the same room with Lanois and wouldn't speak to him).
I'm really curious if Daniel Lanois was even there with Dylan in the end doing the overdubs at the Teatro to finish up the album. That's the biggest mystery to me now; how the album got finished and if the final mixes were really decided primarily by Mark Howard with Dylan's seal of approval.
The Mark Howard interview is gold but I wish it was three times longer... Hahaha...
I've been waiting more than 20 years for all this info, music and discussion! So thanks first of all, for making this site and doing all of this; it's really amazing and greatly appreciated.
I've been going though Fragments and reading about the different days when things were recorded but can't seem to find anything on when the Final Arrangements or Final Takes were made. For instance, we have a date for the alternate take of Highlands, but was that one before or after the one on TOOM? where's the date for the final album version? That's what I want to find out and I think it would be interesting for a lot of us to know. People tend to assume that the last take is always the one that got used but it's not always the case. And, when was that take? The next day, a week later, two months later back at the Teatro during final mixing and overdubs?
We need the dates of the album versions too, not just the alternate takes. Hope you can find that info and post it somewhere. Thanks again!
Fantastic and heroic effort. One slight carp, the same "6.03" "Mississippi" appears on both the "Oxnard" and the "Strummers" list. Shouldn't it be in only one location?
You scared me, but actually there are 2 versions of Mississippi, both called 'Version 1' that are 6:03! The first is from Disc 2 Track 9 1/11/97 (Strummers). The second is Disc 5 (TTS) Track 4 9/96 (Oxnard). I'll verify that the playlists have the right versions linked.
Looks like the same ones, as both are titled "Mississippi (Outtake from 'Time Out Of Mind' Sessions, Version 1)." Again, these are meaningless nits to pick, and THANKS for putting all this together.
Got it - That song didn't belong on the Strummers playlist, and has been removed. I found the source error on my part. There is a Version 1 on both, but I had two Version 1's on that Strummers list. THANKS for being persistent - it's fixed now (and the counts all line up).
Thanks for doing this! Saves me the effort.
This is awesome. Thanks so much for this curation—

Fabulous piece of work, thank you! And thank you Bob!

Coincidentally I just asked him. I’ll let you know if I get an answer.

I wasn’t talking about asking Mark about Watson, I asked Watson.
Oh ok… nice. It’ll be great to hear some details from him. Thanks for all your investigative work. 👍

Yes, the record dates for the album tracks remains a mystery. I'd like to get them too - will see if I can make any progress.
